On July 3, 2008, Prof. Josep Torrellas (from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) visited our lab. and gave a talk entitled "Speculative Multicore Architectures for Programmability".

Abstract: One of the biggest challenges facing computer architecture today is the design of parallel architectures that efficiently support a highly-programmable environment. One of the architectural technologies that is showing great versatility and potential in this direction is Speculative Multithreading. In this talk, he will discuss the many uses of this technology in multiprocessors, and its remarkable potential for performance and programmability.

Bio: Josep Torrellas (http://iacoma.cs.uiuc.edu) is a Professor and Willett Faculty Scholar at the University of Illinois. He spent a year at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center. Torrellas's research area is multiprocessor computer architecture. He leads the Illinois Aggressive COMA Multiprocessor group. He has been involved in the Stanford DASH and the Illinois Cedar multiprocessor projects, and contributed extensively in the area of multiprocessor architecture and thread-level speculation. Torrellas received a PhD from Stanford University. He has received many awards, including an NSF Young Investigator Award, an IBM Partnership, Xerox Awards for Outstanding Faculty Research, and multiple Best-Paper Awards. He is an IEEE Fellow.
